Inspiring and Entertaining Camino Books
Your Camino journey can begin long before you start walking with a great Camino book!
There are lots of great Camino books, movies, blogs and You Tube videos to get you in the mood for embarking on this journey.
That is why we have compiled a list of our favourite inspiring and entertaining books to read on these long wintery nights…
1) My Way, My Way by Bill Bennett
Bill Bennett, an Australian based film director, sets off on an 800 kilometre walk across Spain to Santiago de Compostela not sure why he was doing it, and not feeling entirely comfortable. This memoir is at times hilarious but also deeply moving, insightful and holds your attention to the last page.
2) Spanish Steps: Travels with My Donkey by Tim Moore
With no knowledge of Spain and even less about the care and feeding of donkeys, Tim Moore, a British travel writer, sets out on the Camino to Santiago de Compostela with a donkey named Shinto. A witty, heartwarming and inspirational read about Tim and Shintos adventures.
3) It’s Your Camino: One Couple’s 500-mile Pilgrimage across Spain by Kennett Strange
This is the story of an American couple’s 31-day pilgrimage across northern Spain on the Camino Frances to Santiago de Compostela in 2018. This book accurately and entertainingly shows what a pilgrim might expect when walking the Camino!
4) Buen Camino: A Father and Daughter Journey from Croagh Patrick to Santiago de Compostela by Peter and Natasha Murtagh
Jointly written by Peter Murtagh and his 18 year old daughter Natasha, who embarked on their pilgrimage starting with Croagh Patrick in Ireland, then from Saint Jean Pied de Port to Finisterre. This heartwarming story, told from two very different perspectives is about family, friendship and camaraderie.
5) Onward, Backward! A Ramble to Santiago by Bennett Voyles
Inexperienced, underprepared, and with only the vaguest notion of the pilgrimage, Ben Voyles recounts his Camino with his wife and three teenage daughters who trek 1,500km across France and Spain. An extraordinary story about an extraordinary family. Engaging, entertaining, and historically well-informed account of this international family’s adventures.
So, if you’re thinking about embarking on the trip of a lifetime and would like a glimpse of the possibilities, we highly recommend taking the walk with Bill Bennett, Tim Moore, Kennett Strange, the Murtagh family or the Voyles family and make it your Camino!
