FRENCH WAY (SELF GUIDED)
SARRIA – SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA
The French Way – the quintessential, most traveled and most documented of all the Camino routes to Santiago de Compostela.
It runs from the eastern side of the Pyrenees at Saint Jean Pied de Port in France to Santiago de Compostela in the Northwest of Spain, a distance of 780km. This route follows earlier Roman trade routes and traverses the Pyrenees, beech and pine forests of Navarre, the vineyards of La Rioja, the Meseta of Castile until it reaches the mountains and oak/chestnut forests of Galicia.
This 8 day trip from Sarria will take you through fairy tale like forests, quaint Galician hamlets, open countryside and historical towns to end at Plaza Obradorio in front of the spectacular Cathedral of Santiago in the medieval city of Santiago de Compostela. It is the perfect option for novice Camino walkers as it is the best signposted route and has a great range of services (cafes, restaurants etc) along the trail. It is also recommended for those looking to meet other pilgrims and enjoy the social aspect of the Camino.
As part of this trip, you’ll find featured 7 nights in high quality 2 and 3 star Hotels/Boutique Guesthouses with breakfasts and luggage transport between accommodation. Around-the-clock emergency assistance is also included which adds confidence to the detailed walking notes that cover landmarks, distances and things to see over the course of your walk.
Alongside the sense of achievement and numerous chances to taste the local Galician food, this walking trip entitles you to receive the pilgrim’s certificate of completion or ‘Compostela’.

"I cannot recommend Magic Hill enough! We booked a mother-daughter Camino walking trip along the French Way, from Sarria to Santiago, and everything was organised to absolute perfection. From start to finish, their communication was outstanding, and we always felt supported, even during the trip itself. Knowing we were never "lost" and always encouraged made all the difference. The route was planned superbly, with fantastic hotels at every stop, and our luggage had always arrived within plenty of time before we did - so important after a long day's walk when you just want to freshen up and get changed etc. The highlight of our trip was reaching Santiago, where Magic Hill had arranged an upgrade to an utterly stunning 5-star hotel, complete with a truly wonderful massage to relieve our aches and niggles from walking almost 120 km. Bronagh and the entire team at Magic Hill went above and beyond to ensure this trip was flawless, making it such a special experience for us. This trip and all the memories we made along the way will always have a very special place in our hearts. We are already looking at booking our next Camino adventure through Magic Hill, and we wouldn't dream of booking anywhere else! If you are considering walking the Camino, do it - and book with Magic Hill. You absolutely won't regret it!"
"I wanted to thank Magic Hill and Bronagh in particular sincerely for all the help in arranging our trip and we will definitely do another one next year. From the start of my planning of the Camino the advice and recommendations from Magic Hill were exceptional and we agreed that the 8 day French Way(self guided Camino) was the one for us. The help and support during our trip was exceptional, from the help with the additional bag being collected to my poor feet!! I honestly would not have coped without the support with hospital, getting to and from the hospital for dressings – it was simply amazing. If anybody asks me about planning a Camino trip I will have no hesitation whatsoever in advising them to book ONLY with Magic Hill. A big thank you from Ray and myself for making our first Camino a fabulous experience."
"We enjoyed the little villages and the countryside along the el Camino, Lots of rivers and pretty forests on route, also the people in the cafes were very hospitable. Magic Hill were wonderful and really set up well, the places they picked for us to stay were lovely, and they were very helpful with all our needs"
"My wife and I are first time Camino pilgrims who completed the Sarria to Santiago de Compostela 115 km trek in 6 days last June 1. We wanted a simple, self-guided experience without worrying or stressing about logistics. Magic Hill provide us this and more! Bronagh and the team at Magic Hill were easy to communicate with and always helpful. They responded within 24 hours when we emailed them. On the trail, they regularly kept in touch via whatsapp. The hotels we stayed in were well placed and had all the essentials we needed. We heavily depended on their guide on cafes and restaurants on the trail to plan our breaks and meals. Overall, Magic Hill sprinkled that Camino magic to make this an amazing and a dream come true pilgrimage for our silver wedding anniversary this year. I definitely recommend Magic Hill to our family and friends who have taken an interest in the Camino pilgrimage."
"Just to say thanks to Bronagh and team for the planning and support during our recent Camino. From start to finish we had an amazing time. I'm hoping to go again next year. Thanks again. "
"I walked the Camino for my husband who booked a trip for us Easter 2020 but which got cancelled because of the pandemic. He never made it. He passed Dec 2023. I walked the Camino for him. Thank you so much for making this possible, for everything you’ve done and all your tips & advices. I am glad i choose Magic Hill"
