The quintessential, most traveled and most documented of all the Ways.

Running from the western side of the Pyrennes at Roncesvalles to Santiago de Compostela in the Northwest of Spain, the French Way is the Way par excellence. It is the most famous route to Santiago and the most walked (in 2017, 180,000 pilgrims from all over the world reached Santiago).

The French Way was one of the most important Christian pilgrimages during the Middle Ages, its entire length being 780km. It follows earlier Roman trade routes and traverses the Pyrennes, beech and pine forests of Navarre, the vineyards of La Rioja, the meseta of Castile until it reaches the mountains and the oak and chestnut forests of Galicia.

Our 8 day trip runs from Sarria to the cathedral of Santiago through medieval towns, meadows, small villages, past rivers and eucalyptus forests. It is the perfect option for novice Camino walkers as it is the best signposted route and has a great range of services (cafes, restaurants etc). It is also recommended for those looking to meet other pilgrims and enjoy the social aspect of the Camino. Daily distances are an average of 22.9km.

As part of this trip you’ll find featured 7 nights in comfortable locally-owned 2/3 hotels or rural guesthouses with breakfasts and luggage transport between accommodation. Around-the-clock emergency assistance is also included which adds confidence to the detailed walking route notes that cover landmarks, distances and things to see over the course of your walk.

Travel review:

“I recently did the final section of the French Way with my husband. We used Magic Hill and I found Bronagh to be so helpful with my many questions before we travelled! When we arrived it was such plain sailing! Accommodation was fabulous and very easy to find. I particularly loved the walking notes- very informative and it was great to read up on all the villages and towns we were walking through. We will definitely use Magic Hill again as I can’t wait to return to walk some more!”
