FRENCH WAY (SELF GUIDED)
SAINT JEAN PIED DE PORT (SJPP) – PAMPLONA
The French Way is the most famous Camino route to Santiago. It runs from the eastern side of the Pyrenees at Saint Jean Pied de Port to Santiago de Compostela in the Northwest of Spain, extending to a distance of 780km. This route follows earlier Roman trade routes and traverses the Pyrenees, beech and pine forests of Navarre, the vineyards of La Rioja, the Meseta of Castile until it reaches the mountains and oak/chestnut forests of Galicia.
This 6 day walking experience takes you over the first section of this Camino from the beautiful French village of Saint Jean Pied de Port to the medieval city of Pamplona, loved by Hemingway and home to one of Spain’s most famous festivals.
The first walking day crosses the Pyrenees offering spectacular views of the green mountain range. The trail ascends through Alpine style meadows to a peak of 1,450m where it crosses the border into Spain and descends through a remarkable beech forest to Roncesvalles. The Camino continues through pine, beech and oak forests and small villages with traditional style Basque houses to Zubiri. The final walking day combines a beautiful rural environment, along the banks of the Arga River, with an urban environment to finish at the Cathedral in the centre of Pamplona.
This trip is not recommend for novice walkers. A moderate level of fitness and walking experience is required due to the steep gradient over the Pyrenees. It is ideal for people who plan to walk the entire Camino in stages over a number of years or those who are seeking to meet other pilgrims and enjoy the social side of the Camino.
As part of this trip, you will stay 5 nights in high quality 2 and 3 star Hotels/Boutique Guesthouses with breakfast and luggage transport between your accommodation. Around-the-clock emergency assistance is also included which adds confidence to the detailed walking notes which covers landmarks, distances and things to see over the course of your walk.

"Though we’ve hiked hundreds of miles through the United States and Europe, Magic Hill simply, wonderfully spoiled us on our recent Camino de Santiago trek. Bronagh, our Magic Hill agent, unfailingly responded to our text questions within minutes, even atop the Pyrenees. When we needed some rest days, Bronagh was very helpful getting us early hotel check-ins and late check outs so we could rest up. Arranging taxi pick-ups, Bronagh was like our own long-distance sherpa. We asked for a shorter mileage itinerary with ensuite accommodations that met our slow pace and comfort preferences. Magic Hill met these needs beautifully. All of our accommodations were perfectly located and charming. I would not consider another company for our next Camino hike. Thank you Magic Hill, and special thanks to Bronagh. You were wonderful."
"We are just home after completing the first 1/3 of the French way that will take us from St Jean Pied-de-Port to Santiago and onto Finisterre a total of over 900 km taken over 3 years with the excellent advice and support of Magic Hill and Bronagh in particular. I can't say enough of the help Magic Hill provided with back up phone calls and advice and it was a great comfort to know they were there to provide information if our schedule had to change due to bad weather etc. We completed our first 1/3 of the French way of 285 km over 12 walking days and four rest days built in for sightseeing and Bronagh was Magic in her own way to make this a success. See you next year for part two and another 300km"
"This was an excellent trip - the scenery was spectacular and we met some very nice people along the way. Based on good advice from Magic Hill we opted to complete the first stage across the Pyrenees in 2 days. The hotels along the way were excellent . They were very clean and staff were very friendly. The walking notes and itinerary information provided was really helpful. The support from Magic Hill was very good and they were always available. One small issue with baggage transfer was promptly solved by them. We would strongly recommend Magic Hill to anyone who is planning to experience the Camino. We hope to use their excellent service again next year."
"On behalf of my entire group, we thank you for another wonderful Camino experience. Every Camino experience has brought with it its own highs and lows but always a memorable one. Thank you again for being so responsive and taking good care of us all throughout. We are already talking about our next one and will definitely be back."
"What a wonderful family week we had together. So enjoyable from the walking, the lovely hotels and the different people we have met along the way. It’s mindfulness at its best. Thank you so much for all your help, I’m looking forward to our next trip back to continue this amazing experience"
