FRENCH WAY (SELF GUIDED)
ARZUA – SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA
The French Way is the quintessential, most traveled and most documented of all the Camino routes.
Running from the eastern side of the Pyrennes at Saint Jean Pied de Port to Santiago de Compostela in the Northwest of Spain, the French Way is the Way par excellence. It is the most famous route to Santiago and the most walked (in 2018, 186,199 pilgrims from all over the world reached Santiago).
During the Middle Ages, the French Way was one of the most important Christian pilgrimages. It follows earlier Roman trade routes and traverses the Pyrennes, beech and pine forests of Navarre, the vineyards of La Rioja, the meseta of Castile until it reaches the mountains and the oak and chestnut forests of Galicia.
Our 4 day trip runs from Arzua to the Cathedral in Santiago through quaint rural hamlets, meadows and eucalyptus forests. It is the perfect Camino for those short of time and who would like a ‘taste’ of the experience before embarking on a longer route. This section is well signposted and has a good range of services (cafes, restaurants etc) for rest breaks. Please note: You will not be entitled to receive a Compostela as you need to walk a minimum of 100km.
As part of this trip you’ll find featured 3 nights in high quality 2 and 3 star Hotels/Boutique Guesthouses with breakfasts and luggage transport between accommodation. Around-the-clock emergency assistance is also included which adds confidence to the detailed walking notes that cover landmarks, distances and things to see over the course of your walk.
Optional extras include: airport transfers, an upgrade to the 5 Star Parador Hotel in Santiago and an additional ‘free day’ to explore the incredible Old Quarter of Santiago de Compostela.

"Thanks to Bronagh for a fantastic trip. All were very pleased with the standard of accommodation and all your tips. Our 2 days walking was a great taster of what the camino offers – we all hope to come back to do more. We all loved Santiago! having coffee in the hotel courtyard being one of the highlights. The free walking tour was also excellent (the English version was at 10 am on Sunday.) Our hotel was in a great location."
"I reached out to Magic Hill to ask for a customized trip that would be manageable for my parents who are in their late 70s (and have had no experience with long treks). Bronagh and her team came back to me with a route that was very apt, given that we were also celebrating my parents' 50th anniversary! Magic Hill's services were impressive - from accommodating multiple changes as my sister, then my nephew, decided to join us, to preparing letters to support my parents' visa application, to sending pre-travel reminders through mail (which included a digital map that was muy útil!) and ensuring that the "travel kit" with the passports, guides etc were at the first hotel the moment we stepped in. Magic Hill also maintained constant communication with us from the get go of our arrival in Spain, ensuring that we had clarity on the next steps. The selected accommodations were very charming and were along the Camino - super convenient and with the digital map, there was just no way that we (despite being first timers) could get lost. At no point did we need to reach out to Magic Hill for further support but Bronagh and team's regular messages were very reassuring! The final (pleasant) surprise upon arriving at the hotel in Santiago (which was amazingly just behind the Cathedral) was Magic Hill's anniversary gift for my parents - this was a really nice gesture to wrap up the trip. Not only did we get beautifully clear skies during the 4 days we walked, but Magic Hill's arrangements made the experience truly enjoyable, memorable and hassle free. I would definitely recommend Magic Hill and would keep them in mind if at some point in the future I would decide to do the Camino again."
"Thank you Magic Hill for the superb organisation, the personal support and frequent updates and check-ins all along the journey."
"Honestly your whole package has been incredible!! The service is amazing, thank you so much"
"Thank you very much for organizing my Camino. It was seamless. I will sure use your service again in the future. Again, thank you."
