12 DAY CELTIC CAMINO

KERRY CAMINO + ENGLISH WAY (FERROL – SANTIAGO)

This wonderful 12 Day trip combines the Kerry Camino in Ireland with the English Way in Spain, following in the footsteps of Irish medieval pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela. This trip is split into two parts: the Kerry Camino and the English Way which have to be done at different times.

Kerry Camino Section (Ireland)

The Kerry Camino is a 57km walking trail from Tralee to Dingle in the wonderful south west of Ireland. This route forms the first three walking days of the 179km Dingle Way, a circular route of the Dingle Peninsula which starts and finishes in Tralee, the capital of Kerry.

This popular and well signposted trail offers a variety of landscapes from walking in the foothills of Slieve Mish to the tranquil setting of pastoral farmland, passing through many picturesque villages and the remote golden sands of Inch beach. This route is steeped in history with many archeological sites along the way and references to the local Antarctic explorer Tom Crean.

This relatively flat trail is regarded as easy to moderate in difficulty ranging from sea level to 200m – doable for all levels of walkers with prior preparation and determination.

English Way Section (Spain)

The English Way is regarded as one of the most beautiful walking trails the Camino has to offer in Spain. Leaving from the port city of Ferrol along the coast, it travels through the medieval towns of Pontedeume with its beautiful plazas, and Betanzos which is known for the best tortillas in Spain, through eucalyptus forests to rural villages and countryside until you reach Santiago de Compostela.

This slightly ‘off the beaten track’ trail, is recommended for people seeking a quieter, more spiritual experience, away from the crowds of the final stages of the French and Portuguese Way.

As part of this trip, you’ll find featured 1 night in a 3 star Hotel in Tralee, 4 nights in 3&4 star Guesthouses on the Kerry Camino, 7 nights in 2/3 star Hotels and Rural Houses on the English Way with breakfasts and luggage transport between accommodation. Around-the-clock emergency assistance is also included which adds confidence to the detailed walking notes that cover landmarks, distances and things to see over the course of your walk.

Alongside the sense of achievement and numerous chances to taste the local Galician and Irish food and experience the traditional Galician and west of Ireland culture, this walking trip entitles you to receive the Kerry Camino Certificate in Dingle, a Celtic Camino Compostela from the Camino Society of Ireland and a pilgrim’s certificate of completion in Santiago de Compostela.

Kerry Camino link with the Camino de Santiago in Spain

The English Way Camino was the preferred route to Santiago de Compostela for medieval pilgrims coming from Ireland, England and Scandinavian countries who arrived by boat to Ferrol to start their pilgrimage.

To recognise this tradition, the Cathedral of Santiago in Spain grants a Camino de Santiago Compostela to pilgrims who have completed a certified 25km in Ireland plus 75km of the English Way. This provides a great opportunity to walk part of the Camino at home in Ireland, as well as in Spain.
