KERRY WAY (SELF GUIDED)
KILLARNEY – CAHERSIVEEN
This 6 day walking trip takes you over the first section of the Kerry Way, from the popular tourist town of Killarney to Cahersiveen in the south west of Ireland.
The 214km Kerry Way, Ireland’s longest and most popular marked walking trail, is a circular route around the Iveragh Peninsula which starts and finishes in Killarney. It is the walking alternative to the world famous Ring of Kerry scenic drive which follows a similar route.
The well signposted trail passes through spectacular and diverse landscapes, from the lakes of Killarney to forests, mountain valleys and picturesque towns and fishing villages rich in history and legends. Although Kerry is home to Ireland’s highest mountain range, the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks, the Kerry Way generally follows along the lower slopes of the Reeks before looping out around the Iveragh Peninsula, an area of wild and natural beauty with spectacular views overlooking Dingle Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.
This trail is ideal for those who would like to begin at the ‘start’ of the Camino and be able to pick up where they left off at a later date. Please note there are daily ascents and descents of 250-350m and is recommended for people with a moderate level of fitness and walking experience.
As part of this trip, you’ll find featured 5 nights in comfortable locally-owned 3&4 star B&Bs/Guesthouses and a 4 star Hotel in Killarney with breakfasts. Having self guided notes, luggage transfers, hand-picked accommodation and 24hr telephone assistance allows confidence to grow while lessening the stress of attempting this trip with complete independence.
Alongside the sense of achievement and numerous chances to taste the local Irish food and experience the traditional Irish culture, this walking trip entitles you to receive the Celtic Camino Compostela from the Camino Society of Ireland.
Link to the Camino de Santiago in Spain
Irish medieval pilgrims embarked on their Camino to Spain from the Irish ports of Dingle, Galway, Dublin, Drogheda, New Ross and Waterford to A Coruña and Ferrol port in northwest Spain, where they continued on the English Way to Santiago de Compostela.
To recognise this tradition, the Cathedral of Santiago in Spain will grant a Camino de Santiago Compostela to pilgrims who have completed a certified 25km in Ireland plus 75km of the English Way. This provides a great opportunity to walk part of the Camino at home as well as in Spain.
